West-Wide Wind Mapping Project

Maps and Data

Use the links on this page to download maps and related information, and geospatial data used in the West-Wide Wind Mapping Project.

Wind Energy Development Exclusions and Resource Sensitivities Table

This table lists categories of environmental resources and other areas on BLM-administered lands excluded from wind energy development, as well as resources and areas where proposed wind energy projects would be expected to have a high level of siting considerations or a moderate level of siting considerations.

Regional and State Wind Energy Development Exclusions and Resource Sensitivities Maps

These maps depict areas on BLM-administered lands excluded from wind energy development, as well as areas with potentially suitable wind energy resources and the expected level of siting considerations for proposed wind energy projects.

Wind Energy Development Acreage Table

This table presents acreages of BLM-administered lands with respect to their categorization as lands excluded from wind energy development and lands where projects would be expected to have a high level of siting considerations or a moderate level of siting considerations.

Geospatial Data

Geospatial data used for the West-Wide Wind Mapping Project are available for download. Files are available in Esri File Geodatabase format and in Esri Shapefile format for use with geographic information system (GIS) software.

PLEASE NOTE: The following files are compressed Zip file archives containing multiple files. These files are extremely large and may involve very long download times.

Esri File Geodatabase Format

This download includes key layers used in the West-Wide Wind Mapping Project in Esri File Geodatabase format, which is the native format used in the project. In addition to the geospatial data, this download comes with an ArcReader portable map file to display the data. The ArcReader application can be downloaded free of charge. ArcReader is a desktop application which can be used to display, zoom, pan, and query data. ArcReader version 10.3 or higher is required.

Esri Shapefile Format

The following downloads include key layers used in the West-Wide Wind Mapping Project in Esri shapefile format, which can be used in Esri ArcGIS as well as many open-source GIS applications. These files contain the same data supplied in the WWMP Data Viewer, but grouped for easier downloading. Users must have GIS software installed on their desktop to use these files.

Need Help? Have Questions?

If you experience any problem downloading these files, need assistance, or have questions about the maps or mapping data, please contact the Webmaster at [email protected].

PLEASE NOTE: This website does not provide technical support for ArcReader software, and questions related to installation or operation of ArcReader or other software programs will not be answered.

Data Limitations

This project used the best available geospatial data which may contain errors. Geospatial data were not available consistently for some existing and/or potential wind energy exclusions and other data types, and some known exclusions and other resource areas are not shown on the maps. The data may be downloaded for other uses, but only provide a "snapshot" of data used for the West-Wide Wind Mapping Project, and may not reflect the most current datasets or wind energy development exclusions. Geospatial data for the West-Wide Wind Mapping Project was compiled between March 2015 and September 2016. Consult the maps and the Project Report for information about other important limitations.
